Benefits of Shockwave Therapy
WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?
Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive medical treatment that utilises high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in various tissues of the body.
WHY WOULD I NEED SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?
Have you or someone you know got a longstanding chronic injury that has resisted multiple treatments? Shockwave could be your answer.
We use diagnostic ultrasound to visualise the target tissue and determine the best place to deliver the shockwave acoustic energy.
It is able to reverse a poorly healed chronic tissue and kick start the body’s acute healing processes.
BENEFITS OF SHOCKWAVE THERAPY:
- It has been proven by research to effectively reduce pain.
- It helps to speed up tissue repair and cell regrowth to help recover from injuries.
- A great alternative for anyone with an existing injury that has not responded to other management approaches such as manual therapy and or exercise rehabilitation.
- It stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that helps repair damaged tissues and promotes regeneration. This makes it beneficial for conditions like tendinopathies.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL YOU NEED?
On average, three to six sessions are required. Often, if the issue has persisted for months or years, you may more likely need 6 sessions. You will require a full Physiotherapy assessment prior to any shockwave therapy treatment to ensure it is appropriate for you and ensure any required exercises can also be prescribed. This may also give us an indication of the anticipated number of sessions.
DOES IT HURT?
Generally most people tend to not experience discomfort throughout the treatment. At times, there may be some sore spots but our therapists can adjust the pressure and location to reduce this.
