Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive medical treatment that utilises high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in various tissues of the body. Originally developed to break down kidney stones, shockwave therapy has found applications in orthopedics, sports medicine, urology, and other fields.
During shockwave therapy, a handheld device delivers acoustic waves to the affected area of the body. These waves create mechanical stress, promoting cellular activity and blood flow in the targeted tissue. The therapy can be adjusted to different energy levels and frequencies, depending on the specific condition being treated.
Shockwave therapy offers several benefits:
- Pain relief: Shockwave therapy is particularly effective in relieving chronic pain, such as plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, and bursitis. It stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving substances in the body, providing long-lasting pain relief.
- Tissue repair and regeneration: The mechanical stress caused by shockwave therapy triggers a healing response in the body. It stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that helps repair damaged tissues and promotes regeneration. This makes it beneficial for conditions like tendinopathies and delayed fracture healing.
- Improved blood circulation: Shockwave therapy promotes increased blood flow to the treated area, which aids in the delivery of nutrients and oxygen necessary for healing. It also helps remove metabolic waste products, reducing inflammation and improving tissue function.
- Non-invasive and minimal side effects: Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical and non-invasive treatment option. It doesn’t require anaesthesia and has minimal side effects compared to more invasive procedures. Patients may experience mild discomfort during the treatment, but it typically subsides quickly.
- Avoidance of medication or surgery: Shockwave therapy provides an alternative to medication or surgery for certain conditions. It can be a viable option for individuals who prefer non-pharmacological treatments or want to avoid more invasive procedures.
It’s important to note that shockwave therapy may not be suitable for everyone, and its effectiveness can vary depending on the individual and the specific condition being treated. It’s best to consult with a healthcare professional or specialist to determine if shockwave therapy is appropriate for your particular case.
We now offer shockwave therapy treatment at our Highcliffe clinic every Friday!
To ensure it is appropriate for you, you must initially book in for an Initial Physiotherapy Assessment. We will then assess your injury/pain, outline a plan and discuss the appropriateness of shockwave therapy with you.
It is important to complete exercises prescribed by your Physiotherapist alongside your course of shockwave therapy treatment too.
