As we start 2023 we at Limitless Physiotherapy and Performance believe it is the perfect time to set new goals, especially around health and fitness. By improving your health and fitness this year, you are likely to improve your quality of life, feel stronger and reduce the risk of any long term chronic conditions such as osteoporosis. Also, you will experience a decrease in any anxiety and depression you may have suffered from in the past. This is supported by a study done on office workers. An exercise program was introduced during their day at work and the studied concluded, the workers experienced increased mental health after exercise.
In this blog post, we are going to give you 5 tips on the best ways to improve you health and fitness!
- Exercise with a friend/partner – Evidence has shown that exercising/going on a health journey with someone else helps maintain motivation because you are likely to push each other on and will not want to let each other down. Also, by exercising with a friend/partner can often feel like you are achieving something together which gives off positive endorphins. Finally, it gives you someone to talk to!
- Find something you enjoy – So many times people get to January, buy a gym membership and then cancel it 3 months later because they don’t enjoy the gym environment. If this is you, don’t feel alone because this is very common. The good news is, the gym isn’t the only place you can improve fitness and health. The more you enjoy doing something, the more likely you are to continue to do it. Therefore it is vital you find something you enjoy, whether that be going on a walk, doing some gardening, playing golf or doing a workout at home.
- Track your steps – Recent studies have suggested by walking 10,000 steps a day, your physical and metal health and fitness will improve. Therefore, we think it is a great idea to track your steps. This can be done on a Fitbit which tend to cost around £50-£300. If this is a bit too expensive, you can get a pedometer on amazon for around £10-£20. Also, if you have a smart phone, they track your steps as well. By tracking your steps, you then have an objective measurement to see how well you are doing, which can further motivate you to do more.
- Drink plenty of water – By drinking plenty of water a day, it can improve skin, regulate blood pressure, increase energy and improve joint health as well as many more benefits! How much is ‘plenty’ then? The recommendations suggest we should be drinking between 1-2 litres of water a day. This equates to 6-10 200ml glasses of water a day.
