Here at Limitless, we are really experienced at diagnosing and rehabbing Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries.
In this blog post, we will go through what the injury is, how it happens, who is most at risk, signs and symptoms and how we can help you with your ACL injury.
What is an ACL injury?
An ACL injury is when there has been a tear or complete rupture of your ACL. The ACL sits in the knee joint and the front and plays a key role in knee stability during landing and twisting movements.
The knee itself is made up of four main ligaments. The ACL, PCL, LCL and MCL. Out of these four ligaments, the ACL is most common one to be injured.
Who is at most risk of suffering from an ACL injury?
People at most risk are people who compete in sports that require a high level of twisting, jumping, landing and pivoting such as rugby, football, basketball and gymnastics.
If you have sustained previous injuries round your lower limb for example a ligament sprain, muscle strain or fracture, you are at more risk of injuring your ACL.
Also, females are at more risk of injuring their ACL compared to males, with factors such as muscle strength, difference in anatomy and hormonal influences being attributed as to why.
Signs and symptoms of an ACL injury:
Main signs and symptoms include pain, swelling and bruising around the knee. Your knee may feel weaker and less stable and you may feel as though your knee wants to give way more. Also, you may hear an audible pop/snap suggesting a full rupture of the ACL.
